What the heck is Genomics?

Most people have heard of genetic testing. Currently there are several commercials out there advertising how you can discover your ancestry using your DNA. But few have heard of “genomic” testing. There is a difference, so let’s take a moment to distinguish the differences so that we are all starting on the same page.

In 2003, the Human Genome Project was completed. It showed all humans shared 99.9% of the same DNA. What makes each of us different, whether it is skin, hair or eye color, or even disease susceptibility is that 0.01% of DNA! A very small but powerful difference!

Genetics deal with rare mutations, or changes in the DNA that are often passed down from one generation to another. The outcome is usually predictable – you get a disease. A genetic mutation results in a complete loss of function of that gene, usually resulting in a breakdown of a body system, and most often leads to a disease condition. Common mutations you may know about are Sickle Cell Anemia, Tay Sachs disease, Huntington’s disease, or Down syndrome. These are all inherited mutations that cause a specific disease. What all of these have in common is that if you have the genetic mutation, you get the disease. Luckily these mutations are rare and occur in less than 1% of the general population. Presently, we do not know how to change the outcome of these mutations.

GENOMICS is different. Genomic testing evaluates subtle changes, or what I call “hiccups”, or variations in a person’s DNA called SNPs (pronounced snips). SNP stands for Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms. Genomics also deals with changes in our DNA, but these changes happen to be more common. SNPs are present in more than 1% of the population and sometimes are found in more than 50% of a given population. Now here is a crucial difference: the impact of a SNP isn’t predictable. The impact can vary and therefore may not directly cause disease. A SNP may have no effect at all, or it may change the shape of a protein making it less effective or sometimes it may actually rev it up. It all depends on the SNP and the interaction with the environment including your diet, your emotions and your physical environment. These gene “hiccups” can be inherited or occur spontaneously when your DNA unzips itself during cell division.

Unlike genetic mutations, where we cannot alter how that gene expresses itself, with genomic SNPs, we can change how a gene functions with diet, lifestyle and nutritional supplements. This is a game changer in health care! I find this so incredibly exciting because when you know how these SNPs can impact your Health AND then find out specifically what you need to do to correct them, you can take powerful steps to avoid or postpone getting many of the chronic diseases of aging such as heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity and CANCER! And that includes Breast Cancer. Now this is the really breathtaking and amazing take-away – while you cannot change your DNA, you CAN change the outcome! Your DNA is not your Destiny!
